Azhar in Cong: What Does it Mean?
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Feb 24 2009

A player and captain who served his country with aplomb. Until the match fixing scandal broke out and the late Hansie Cronje paid a heavy price. Now banned since 2000, he has been roped in by a political party. What does it mean? One must wonder whether the Congress party is in a desperate mode or simply looking for succour every where. It must explain why they have held out open arms for Mohammad Azharuddin, whose public image diminished significantly after he was handed a life time ban for his alleged role in the match fixing saga. While the former Indian captain has maintained his innocence despite circumstance evidence still hovering around him, how the party thinks it is salvaging itself remains a baffling case in point. Leave alone the fact that Azharuddin has not been able to successfully lift the aura of suspicion around him, he was never the most eloquent speakers at most press conferences. Often it was questioned of him whether he was a good communicator in the dressing room. That makes it a tough decision as one must wonder what it is Congress is trying to convey, and how!
