Flintoff Disciplined for Missing Bus for Ypres
Sreelata Yellamrazu | Jun 30 2009

Andrew Flintoff is in the news for both, good and bad reasons. Andrew Flintoff is reported to have recovered well from the knee surgery he had to undergo midway through the IPL. It has meant that not only had he to skip the IPL after playing just a handful of matches in the IPL 2 in South Africa for the Chennai Super Kings despite earning the biggest pay cheque of the tournament, but also, had to undergo a lengthy programme to get back to fitness again. Now he forms a key member of the Ashes team of England as they look to erase shameful memories of the 2006-’07 season when England lost 5-0 to the Australian team. But he did not get off to the ideal start. Flintoff was apparently reprimanded for a breach of discipline that saw him miss the bus to Ypres where the England team went to Flanders Field in Belgium to pay tributes to the World War I veterans. He missed the journey with his team on the Armed Forces Day and then, later caught up with the team.

Flintoff would not want to be courting trouble a la Andrew Symonds who was sent back from the Australian team location over breaches best chronicled. Flintoff’s perhaps most ignominious moment came in the West Indies when he was found all at sea, in boat and beached dry as he lost the vice captaincy during the 2007 World Cup. Certainly the England team needs a rather responsible Flintoff, especially in the absence of Michael Vaughan, who always appears to be making amends for spending time off the field with injuries.
